Our support for local charities still goes on !

Despite the fact that Viatores Lodge has been unable to formally meet since February, due to the current pandemic, members have still been able to continue with their contributions to the Lodge’s Charity efforts.

On Wednesday the 9th of December 2020, our Worshipful Master. Worshipful Brother Robert Pickett, accompanied by his good lady, Angela, met with the Chairman, Janet Webber of the Friends of Worthing Hospital outside the Hospital in Lyndhurst Road, Worthing.

The Friends Association which was formerly known as “The League of Friends”, has been active in providing support and comfort for the well-being of patients, relatives and staff at a number of the local NHS facilities for almost 60 years, being mainly supported by charitable donations.

The Worshipful Master presented the Chairman with a cheque in the amount of £500.00 on behalf of Viatores Lodge which was very thankfully received. The Master subsequently received an email thanking the Lodge for the donation and supplied a detailed summary of the extensive activities that are undertaken by the “Friends” in Worthing and the surrounding areas.

On the 5 August 2020 the Charity Steward of Viatores Lodge No 4252 Worshipful Brother David Holliday presented a cheque for the sum of £1,080 to Chestnut Tree House.

The cheque is a contribution towards the cost of replacing the flooring at Chestnut Tree House which had been identified as being required to maintain their high standard of care.

It became apparent that the flooring on the ground floor of Chestnut Tree House was no longer fit for purpose. Having been installed many years ago the carpet did not comply with current infection control and care quality standards. Therefore it was decided replace all the existing ground floor areas with modern Sarlon Acoustic Vinyl which is quieter, more hard wearing and easier to clean.

The total cost of the Project is in the region of £29,000 so this cheque will help to pay for part of the cost.

A sum of £540 was raised for this project by Lodge Raffles during the year and our recent Ladies Dinner. We decided to make an application for ‘match funding’ from the Provincial Grand Lodge of Sussex which was successful. Viatores Lodge has therefore been able, with their help, to double its contribution to this worthy Charity.

Postponed Installation 2020

After a very successful Ladies Dinner in February, the next major event in the Lodge Calendar was Installation meeting scheduled for Saturday 14th March 2020.

Arrangements had been made for the Lodge to have support from the Sussex Provincial Grand Stewards Lodge and the detailed planning completed to receive the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master R. W.Bro. Christopher L. Moore his escort and mini Provincial Team, along with a number of guests invited by members including several distinguished Brethren as personal guests of the Master Elect. Overall some 92 Brethren were expected to attend of which 88 had booked to dine at the Festive Board afterwards.

Unfortunately, due to circumstances completely out of our control, namely concern about the rapid spread in the UK of the Covid-19 pandemic, we had no option but to cancel the meeting at the very last minute on Friday 13th March, much to the disappointment of all those concerned.

Subsequently, we, like a large number of Lodges and Chapters, have been able to hold some administration types of meetings and some social sessions using the facility of the video conferencing software Zoom. This has at least enabled both the official offices of Grand and Provincial Lodges as well as private Lodge and Chapters to maintain regular communication links with their members, while we await the opportunity to resume our Masonic activities and the holding of our regular meetings.

It was a return visit to this venue and the Hotel’s resident Chef devised another exciting menu for this special occasion.

The Ladies Dinner for 2020 was a formal Black Tie event with a traditional Ladies Night programme with after dinner speeches from the principle Lodge Officers. It was attended by thirty Lodge Members and Guests.

The President Robert Pickett and his Lady Mrs Angela Pickett welcomed everyone in the bar for pre-dinner drinks. The guests then had their picture taken before moving into the Dining Room.

The Master of Ceremonies for the evening Jim Clark escorted The President and his Lady into the Dining Room who were warmly received by those present. Peter Noakes the Lodge Chaplin then said Grace before the meal was served.

The menu chosen for the Dinner had three choices for each of the Starter, Main Course and Dessert. The diners gave their preferences when booking and these were displayed on individual place cards to assist of the Hotel staff.

The Menu for the Ladies Dinner was as follows: -

After the meal had been served Grace was sung. The President then proposed the first formal toast of the evening to ‘Her Majesty the Queen’ followed by the first verse of the National Anthem.

The President Elect Ian Lay then proposed the toast to the Ladies that included thanking our Ladies for their support. William Holliday presented the Presidents Lady with a bouquet of flowers and all the Ladies received a small gift from the Lodge. Mrs Angela Pickett gave an eloquent reply that included recollections on previous Ladies Nights when she had responded to this Toast.

The Immediate Past President Jeremy French proposed the toast to The President, highlighting some of the events of the past year. The President Robert Pickett responded by thanking the Past President for his interesting speech and support during the year.

A raffle was held during the evening, which raised £150 for Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice. This would be added to the £390 raised at the Lodge meetings during the year making it possible to donate £540 to the Presidents chosen charity. It was announced that ‘matched funding’ would be sort from the Provincial Grand Lodge of Sussex to pay towards new flooring at the Hospice.

The successful event concluded with Members and Guests departure at 11.00pm.
